Provisions for Pharmacy Practice: Final Rule

This article addresses the final rule on the changes in Education Law that affect pharmacy practice in NYS. The final rule amends section 29.7 and Part 63.6 and took effect on June 18,1999. This rule affects several areas of professional conduct for pharmacy, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Unlicensed personnel and their duties.
  • Electronic prescriptions and the record-keeping requirements associated with them.
  • Counseling: both on-premise and off-premise requirement changes.
  • Prescription refill transfers.

Changes on Controlled Substance Prescriptions

On May 19,1999 the NYS Department of Health issued a final rule allowing pharmacists to make changes on many items on controlled substance prescriptions. The article addresses which prescription blanks are affected and the pharmacist's responsibilities.

Interns and Unlicensed Personnel

This is the third in the series of six self-study articles that will appear in Pharmacy Law in 1999. Upon completion of this lesson, pharmacists in NYS should be able to:

  • List the requirements of the internship program
  • Identify the responsibilities of the intern
  • Document the requirements of the preceptor
  • List the authorized and unauthorized functions of unlicensed personnel
